Zombieland

It’s zombie apocalypse on earth!  The planet has been overrun by zombies after a particularly virulent relative of the mad cow disease has turned most of humankind into the walking undead. The zombies are on a rampage attacking the remaining healthy population and turning them into zombies too, resulting in an uncontainable spread of the menace.

First time feature director Ruben Fleischer brings to his gore fest, impeccable timing and plenty of laughs all the way as an unlikely quartet of survivalists sets off on a road trip in pursuit of a zombie-free refuge. Along the way, they find increasingly creative ways and weapons to eliminate the luckless zombies who happen to cross their path.

The characters in the movie, the cowboy Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), college student Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), and the sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), refer to themselves and each other not by their names, but places that relate to them.

Tallahassee is afraid of nothing, and is probably a zombie’s worst nightmare. He delights in his sadistic dispensing of the hapless zombies with his cohorts, inventively using guns, baseball bats, toilet seat covers, pruning shears, a grand piano, or whatever else he can conveniently lay his hands on.
Columbus, on the other hand, is a bundle of phobias (and irritable bowel syndrome), but he survives, nevertheless, largely due to his strict adherence to his zombie survival list. His rules of war include “fasten your seatbelt”, “cardio, cardio, cardio”, “don’t be a hero” and “beware of bathrooms”. By the end of the movie he has pretty much added “a little sunscreen never hurt anybody” to the list. The opportunistic sisters have an agenda of their own.

Ultimately, this horror-action-comedy flick delivers far more laughs and action than it does screams, and in spite of exploding heads and body-fluid-oozing zombies, its pure, unadulterated fun.
