Find the Perfect Pair of Sunglasses: A Style Guide for Your Face Shape

Your perfect pair of sunglasses should complement or contrast  your features. The following guide will help you choose the  sunglasses that look best on you, depending on  your face-shape, nose-shape, skin tone and hair type. If you're looking for men's sunglasses or women's sunglasses; this guide will facilitate your buying experience.

Face Shapes: What Is Yours?

To find your face shape, first sit in front of the mirror with your hair clipped back so that it¿s out of your face and your ears show. It helps if you wear a tube top or wrap a towel around you so that there is no neck line. Now ask yourself the following questions:

  1.  If you had to draw a circumference line around your face, following the hair line and the jaw line, what basic shape would you get? Is it a square, an oblong, an oval, a circle, a triangle or a heart?
  2. Is the widest part of your forehead narrower or wider than the widest part of your jaw?
  3. In relation to your forehead and jaw, how prominent are your cheekbones?

Now that you have answered these questions, you can look for your profile below:

Oval Face
This face has high cheekbones and a chin that is narrower than the forehead.
You can wear absolutely any style of sunglasses. Wayfarers look particularly good on you.

Round Face
This face has very little cheekbone or jaw definition.
Look for sunglasses that emphasise straight, angular lines. Try wide, square frames.

Square
This face has a strong jaw and a wide forehead and chin.
Look for oval, round or curved sunglasses. Cat-eye sunglasses suit you well.

Oblong
This face has a wide forehead and a wide chin. You can use round or square shades. Look for glasses that are rounded at the top and bottom but straight on the sides.

Triangular
This face has a narrow forehead and wide cheekbones and chin. Find sunglasses that minimise the width of your face. Metal frames with rimless bottoms work well for this effect.

Heart
This face has a wide forehead and a narrow chin. Try to find glasses that widen your face. Styles that are wider at the top, like aviators, suit you well.

Nose Shapes: What Is yours?

If you have a large nose,  use large oversized frames to make it look smaller.
If you have a long nose,  sunglasses with high side bars and a low bridge will help to minimise it.
If you have a small nose, glasses with a high bridge or oversized glasses work well for you.

Skin Tone: What Is Yours?

People with pale skin need to choose light coloured or tortoiseshell glasses. Do not use blue or green tinted frames because they will make you look even paler.
Those with olive, Mediterranean, golden or Asian skin look good in silver, gold and clear frames. They should avoid black frames as they are often to overbearing.
Dark or black skin tones look wonderful with metallic frames. Be very careful with black frames, however, they suit some but not others. Bright colours like green, red and yellow can also look great on these skin tones.

Hair Type: What Is Yours?

Curly hair is enhanced with delicate or rimless frames.
Short hair does well with basic geometric shapes like circles and squares.
Very short hair looks good with bold design styles and colours. Embellished or decorated sunglasses are often better on people with very short hair because you can see the embellishments.
Long hair is difficut to categorise sunglasses-wise, because the style will depend on your current  hairstyle.

The key to finding the right pair of sunglasses for you is to create a balance on your face by emphasising its most beautiful parts!
