Up In the Air - Review of the Movie

Up in the Air is a terrific movie based on a novel by Walter Kirn. Directed by Jason Reitman, the story is set against the background of the United States' collapsing economy and high unemployment rates. George Clooney is Ryan Bingham, a man with a job that not many people would want. Firms that are downsizing hire him as the messenger of bad news. Ryan flies around the country handing out pink slips to employees. To soften the blow, he also doles out a pep talk about how losing a job isn’t the end of the world.

What Ryan loves about his job is all that air travel entails, the frequent flier miles, the ambience of airports, the numerous membership cards and even the space-efficient packing involved!

With such a lifestyle, it goes without saying that Ryan is pretty much Teflon-coated when it comes to relationships. Handsome, charming, and an immaculate dresser it doesn’t take much to convince a lady to spend the night with him. Ryan meets his match in fellow traveller Alex (Vera Farmiga), who matches his attitude about business travel and relationships (i.e. a no-strings-attached, good time in the sack).

On the professional front, his high-flying career is threatened by Natalie (Anna Kendrick), who is fresh out of college, computer savvy, and believes teleconferencing is a more economical way of firing someone.

With his career and lifestyle under threat, Ryan asks Natalie to join him on a trip to see what it is like to deliver an earth-shattering piece of news to a stranger.

Overall, Up in the Air is an engrossing watch. Clooney slips into Ryan’s character with such ease and charm that you forget his star persona. Farmiga is sexy and lovable as the older, wiser Alex, while Kendrick holds her own against the pros.
