Internship Summary

bidorbuy represents Africa's largest online market place where more than 600,000 buyers and sellers come together to buy and sell merchandise, services and any other marketable goods.

The company is looking to grow its current technical team with additional graduates to support new project developments in the mobile space as well as our African expansion.

You will work with a team of 3-5 developers that take on new development initiatives and platform enhancements across and the associated portfolio of brand properties. You will be responsible for front-end development and client-side interactions using Java Server Pages, HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, AJAX/jQuery and other related interactive technologies.

Your responsibilities will include making recommendations on front-end technologies, leveraging best practices, accurately estimating and tracking your time across multiple simultaneous projects, as well as working with the community to develop and document methodologies, standards and best practices for the group.

Currently, we are interested in candidates with good knowledge in the Java language. A graduate with practical experience with Tomcat 5.x/6.x and technical knowledge in the development of websites using JavaServer Pages (JSP), HTML, CSS, Javascript and AJAX/jQuery will be the preferred choice. bidorbuy will provide a mentorship and training programme for candidates who have Java language skills, but lack the aforementioned skills.

The ideal candidate will work alongside the technical team and must have excellent Java and Web Design skills. He or she will be required to play a development role on software development projects, assist in design, code and implement appropriate solutions under the mentorship and guidance of senior developers and architects.


  • Generate and maintain front-end code
  • Work on development activities, solutions, methods, and practices
  • Develop new and effective interactive design solutions on time and in scope

  • Conduct code walkthroughs and quality assurance with development teams
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of applications within bidorbuy while conforming to specifications and expectations
  • Database manipulation to create SQL statements and reports
  • Develop and support our front-end (customer facing) and back-end (customer support) websites

  • Graphical and promotional designs (newsletters, banners, white-label)
  • Develop clean and structured HTML 4.0, XHTML 2.0, CSS and JavaScript for front-end design projects.

Core competencies

  • Along with your outstanding drive for excellence, the successful candidate will bring with them:
  • Strong Java programming skills (preferably Java 1.5 or later)
  • JSP, HTML, XHTML, DHTML, CSS, XML programming skills a plus
  • Proficient in JavaScript and jQuery a plus
  • Knowledge of Eclipse/MyEclipseIDE, Tomcat, CVS and Linux a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with a leading application database product such as DB2, Oracle, PostGres or MySQL (creating complex database queries, stored procedures etc) is a plus
  • Development expertise in both a Web (MVC, HTML, JSP, Servlets) and back end environment (JDBC, XML, Webservices etc) is a plus
  • Linux proficiency is a plus
  • Experience in mobile development (mobile web-sites, Android, iPhone, BlackBerry) is beneficial
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Enjoy working closely with others, respectful of other perspectives
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks across multiple projects, under tight deadlines
  • Organized, self-directed, efficient and able to manage complex projects in a timely manner

Desired qualifications

  • Practical website development using Java, JSP, HTML, XHTML, DHTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, AJAX/jQuery and other related interactive technologies is a plus
  • Experience with Tomcat, Eclipse, CVS, Linux and Oracle DB will be a definite asset

Overview of the Internship Programme:

Location: The position is based in Bryanston, Johannesburg.
Duration: 12 months.
Aim: To provide interns with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, thus becoming more employable for prospective future employers. Training will be provided, as well as support and mentoring as needed throughout the year.
