Home Photo Printing

Making the Right Choice

The advent of digital cameras and developments in printing technology has made it easier to print quality photos at home. However, there are a number of points worth considering before you plunge into the world of photo printing.

For home photo printing, the obvious choice of printer is an ink-jet. Laser printers have their advantages for text printing, but ink-jets, with a multitude of printer ink cartridges and paper types to choose from, offer the best potential for photo printing.

Even within the ink-jet printer offerings, there are vast differences in the features, and price. Your choice of the best printer will be determined by your actual requirements. Are you looking for a versatile printer that can handle text and documents as well as photos, or is your printer likely to be dedicated to photo printing?

Another point to consider is how you will get your photo images to the printer. Will you download them to your home computer first, or would it be more useful to think about a printer that can read the memory card directly from your digital camera?

The cost of printer ink shouldn’t be ignored, either. Some printers have a single colour cartridge, while others require 3 or more cartridges for different colour components, which can make them expensive.

Among the printers considered suitable for the home photo enthusiast, the choices are enormous, but here are just a few to consider:

Canon Pixma iP4700
The Canon is a good general purpose ink-jet printer which has the bonus of having two paper trays, so you can load one with normal paper and the second tray with photo paper.

HP Photosmart D7560
More expensive than the Canon, the HP Photosmart has a 3.5 inch LCD screen so you can preview your photos before printing. It also accepts memory cards.

Epson Stylus Photo 1400
If you’re looking for lab-quality photos, the Epson is hard to beat and you can print directly from your camera via PictBridge.

Printing your photos at home requires a little patience, and like most things, practice makes perfect. A point to remember is that your photos will only be as good as the image captured by your camera, although good quality picture handling software on your computer lets you correct some of the basic faults with images.

Equipped with your camera and a good quality photo printer, you can produce top quality photos at home to match the best, so get out there, start clicking and capture those magical moments.
