How to Make a Teddy Bear

This festive season, why not make your own teddy bear and surprise your loved ones with a cuddly gift they¿ll cherish for a long time?! Here¿s how.

Teddy bear making supplies

Depending on the type of teddy bear you want to make, you will need the following supplies.

Fabric: Suede, velour, chenille, fleece, and synthetics fabrics are great for making teddy bears.
Fur: Synthetic/acrylic fur in tones such as golden honey, black, vanilla, bronze, white and pink make for gorgeous bears. Another popular option is mohair in multiple colours as well as solid shades of antelope, praline, and red.
Stuffing: You can choose from fibrefill, synthetic feather and beads, depending on how firm or soft you want your bear to be.
Eyes: Eyes should be about 8-14 mm; you can select from cute carnival eyes, fantasy eyes, googly eyes and minstrel eyes. Stick with black eyes for maximum appeal.

Nose: Your teddy bear nose size should be about 15-40 mm, depending on the size of the bear. Available noses are pretty standard in terms of style.
Paw pads: Suede works best for teddy bear paws, but pebble fabrics and rawhide fabrics are also sturdy and well designed.
Teddy bear clothing: T-shirts with cute sayings, hoodies, tutus, skirts, sportswear, cheerleader outfits, jeans and nightwear are just some of your options.
Tools: It is best to invest in a teddy bear making toolkit which includes all the tools you will need.

Teddy bear making accessories

Accessories make your teddy bear super adorable and you can use them to personalise your bear, based on who you plan to gift it to. Our favourites include shoes or booties, hats, sunglasses and miniature luggage.

Tips & tricks for DIY bears

Making teddy bears is fun, but it needs patience and practice. Start by choosing an easy pattern. There are plenty of free teddy bear patterns available on the Internet or you can buy a book of teddy bear patterns. You'll need to divide your bear into component pieces, sew all the individual pieces, stuff them, clip all seams, sew the pieces together as per instructions, attach ears, eyes and the nose, and then experiment with accessories. All this is easier written than done, so we suggest buying a beginner¿s guide to making teddy bears. Use the guide until you feel confident enough to experiment on your own.

If crafting is your passion, do not miss Hobby-X, South Africa¿s famous crafts exhibition. You will find all the latest craft supplies there, as well as hands-on workshops, and if you perfect the making of teddy bears, show them off at the expo. The next Hobby-X will be held from the 8th-11th March, 2012 at the Coca-Cola Dome, Northgate, Johannesburg. Be there!
