Swing Like A Pro

The search for the perfect golf swing is like the quest for the Holy Grail, with just as many myths.

Check out the top golfers at any top tournament and you’ll see that there are as many variations of golf swing as there are golfers.

But regardless of these variations there are certain basics that apply to all good swings that you can use to develop your own style, particularly if you are just beginning. Let’s take a look at these basics.

Stance:
Considering that your target is at right angles to your body, that the club will swing in an arc around 45 degrees to the horizontal and that your body has to swivel as you swing, you can see that your stance is vital.

Stand with your feet approximately one shoulder width apart. Bend your knees slightly, ideally a vertical line should pass through your kneecap to the middle of your foot, and bend your hips so that your rear sticks out slightly. That vertical line should continue upwards from your foot through your kneecap to the middle of your shoulders.

Grip:
The basic function of the grip is to ensure that the head of the golf club hits the ball squarely. Assuming you are right-handed, the ideal golf grip has the left hand positioned above the right on the club shaft. Both palms should be facing each other, with the back of the left hand and the palm of the right hand facing the target.

Alignment:
It’s no good having a good stance and grip unless your alignment with the target is also correct. Imagine a set of rail lines pointing at the target and that you are standing on one rail line and the ball is on the other line. Another tip is to focus on an alignment mark a few feet in front of you; it may be as simple as a twig. You’ll find it’s easier to align yourself with this rather than a flag a hundred yards away.

Swing:
The swing itself is divided into two parts, the backswing and the downswing. You shouldn’t rush the backswing. Just take it easy. Your left shoulder and hips should turn as the club swings back. The ideal downswing will cause the club head to strike the ball squarely at the maximum controlled speed. If you swing too fast, you’ll lose control and hook or slice the ball.

Finish the swing with a high follow through. That’s the theory, or some of it. But remember that the most important aspect is consistency. Find a swing that works for you and stick to it. It may look strange but if it gets the ball on target, what the heck!
