Dads Come out Tops in the bidorbuy Survey

(6 May 2014) More people celebrate Mother’s Day than Father’s Day. However, those who do celebrate are more likely to buy their Dads a gift and to spend slightly more on Dad than Mom this year. This, according to the latest bidorbuy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day survey conduced online in April 2014. More than five hundred participants completed the survey.

The three gifts Moms are most likely to receive come Mother’s Day are jewellery (28%); chocolates or roses (17%); and gift vouchers (11%). The three most popular Father’s Day gifts are electronic or digital gadgets (32%); items of clothing (13%); and books, CDs or DVDs (11%).

Some of the parents might be a little disappointed when they unwrap the gifts on their special day. The most-wanted gifts among the mothers who took the survey (about 42% of the participants) are spa or shopping vouchers (16%), jewellery (15%) and electronic or digital gadgets (9%). The fathers (about 23% of the participants) yearn for an electronic or digital gadget (22%), a watch (11%) and tools (10%).

The bidorbuy survey revealed that Mother’s Day is celebrated among 93.5%, and Father’s Day among 84% of the participants. This year, about 90% of the participants who celebrate Mother’s Day intend to buy Mom a present, while 92.5% of the participants who celebrate Father’s Day are gearing to buy something for Dad. Altogether, the majority (about 53%) will do their shopping online, as opposed to in a mall; this figure is probably somewhat skewed in favour of the internet, since the survey was conducted online.

Among the participants who celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Day, 64% plan to spend between R100 and R500 for Mother’s Day gifts; 61% plan to spend as much for Father’s Day. Roughly the same percentage (about 9%) of people are budgeting for an under-R100 gift for both Moms and Dads. A slightly bigger percentage of respondents are likely to spend over R500 or even R1000 on Dads than on Moms. This goes against the perceived belief that Father’s Day doesn't get enough recognition as a gift-giving holiday when compared to Mother’s Day.

About 65% of the respondents plan to spend the same amount on the gifts for Mother’s and Father’s Day as last year, while 28% plan to spend more.
