Gas stoves were invented during the 1820s, and became commercially successful from the 1880s.
Beforehand, the only cooking option was a wood-burning fire.
The initial purchase of a gas stove may seem expensive at first. You can buy an electric stove for a lot less than a gas stove. However, the gas stove will pay for itself as you do not have to pay for the electricity costs while the stove is in use. A 9KG bottle costs under R200 to refill, and with regular use can last you up to 6 months.
Gas stoves come in a number of sizes, from a 2 burner stove, which is ideal for single people or camping, to a 4, 5, 6 or even 8 burner which is generally for industrial use.
If you're remodelling your kitchen, you may want to go for a larger unit. But if you're just replacing your old electric stove top, or if space is an issue, then go for the 4 burner. Most 4 burner stoves are built to fit regular stove top dimensions, so there's no need to worry when replacing your old one.
