Purple Lady's Purse, Purple Slipper Flower, Purple Pocketbook Flower or Purple Slipperwort
Calceolaria arachnoidea is native to the Central Zone of Chile, at altitudes that range between 2000 and 3000m above sea level. This herbaceous perennial can reach up to 60cm in height, has beautiful silver-grey basal hairy leaves and blooms during summer.
Calceolaria arachnoidea is of fast growth and blooms the first year from seeds. Its main requirements are lots of light, well drained but slightly moist soil, full sun and regular water – do not over water.
Sow during autumn, in a mix of two portions compost, one portion regular garden soil, one portion vermiculite and one portion sharp river sand. Cover this mixture with a fine layer of sand, distribute the seeds and gently press them against this growing media. Transplant them into pots when the seedlings have 2 true leaves.
Calceolaria arachnoidea is a beautiful addition to a rock garden, as ground cover, container plant etc.
