A private collection of Nelson Mandela Memorabilia. At Nelson Mandela’s 80th birthday party in 1998 a set of limited edition plaques and commemorative plates were given to guests. This set is mounted and framed in yellow wood. This item is rare and the set has hardly ever been offered for sale. On his release from jail in February 1990 Nelson Mandela wrote in journalist Sylvia Vollenhoven’s notebook. This notebook is part of the private collection. A signed and personalised copy of Mandela’s biography, Long Walk to Freedom, is for sale as well as various other related publications. For example a copy of “Nelson Mandela - From Freedom to the Future” signed by the late Kader Asmal.
The original 1994 First Edition of the Nelson Mandela Autobiography, Long Walk To Freedom. A piece of History, signed and dated. And of course there’s a story behind it...The book was a gift to Sylvia Vollenhoven from Mandela himself. When it first arrived his assistant had made a mistake and the book was not personalised. But he asked for it to be returned and at a later date he added a name and in addition to the “compliments” line given to several people, he added her name plus: “& best wishes”. It is with great regret that this item is for sale.
This sale is happening because journalist Sylvia Vollenhoven’s small independent company Vision In Africa (VIA) produced a documentary film about government corruption in South Africa. The SA Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) tried to censor the film and took it off their schedule. Then when the producer attempted to show it to small audiences and raise a public fuss, the SABC took her to court. When she opposed the Supreme Court action they froze a contract worth almost a million rand at the last minute. The gap left by the SABC’s punitive action is huge...
