Zephyranthes candida (ammaryllidaceae), is a clump forming bulbous perennial from South America, and just cant be beaten for an easy to grow garden performer. It is evergreen with 3mm rounded 30cm long “ rush like “ leaves. ( almost like thicker grass nerine leaves). Largish ( 5cm) crocus-like flowers appear in masses in late summer-autumn ( March-May) after good rains or heavy watering. They grow best in full sun to part shade and require a well composted soil, and are quite hardy to drought once established. Does equally well in pots or the garden as a specimen clump or in mass. Propogation is by bulb offsets which form freely.
They are cold hardy as far north as USDA zone 5 , so are excellent for colder climate gardens.
Bulbs are naturally small ( approx.1-2cm), and will start dividing into more bulbs when only this big. Note the offsets already forming on the bulbs on the photo on the right. Bulbs on sale are of flowering size. This species multiplies profusely when happy and settled.
