Circular silver medal with claw and swivel ribbon bar suspension; the face with the head of King Edward VII facing right, circumscribed ‘EDWARDUS VII REX IMPERATOR’ (Edwards VII King Empror); the reverse with a standing full-length bare-chested female figure representative of Natal, the sword of justice in her right hand, a palm branch in her left, the full-length helmeted figure of Britannia to her left, a standard in her right hand, the orb of empire in her left, Zulu weapons underfoot, tribes people beyond right, a radiant sun in the distance, inscribed ‘NATAL’ below. The medal was instituted in 1907 by the government of the Colony of Natal and awarded to local forces that suppressed the Zulu revolt led by Bambatha kaMancinza. Just over ten thousand medals were awarded in total, approximately eight thousand with the ‘1906’ clasp, of which just 878 were to the Natal Carbineers. A very good example. It comes with the orriginal ribbon. Silver minuature medal |
