This gem comes from Ethiopia, source of the highest and best quality Contra Luz Crystal Opal world-wide. Ethiopian Opals are the most valued of ALL opals on the current market, by far exceeding quality of Mexican or Honduran stones. Commercially mined for less than 10 years, end of mining is predicted in 12-15 year time. Typical retail of these gems lies close to 3.000,-USD per carat.
This colour represents the best and most valued transparent base that bursts into a rainbow of colours when observed in direct sun or under any artificial light source. The light must be entering this gem from behind or from the side to show the contra luz opalescent fire. Generally, the stronger the light source, the stronger the play of colours! Very low opalescence is displayed if this gem is observed in low light or under cloudy sky. The opalescence in this Top quality gem is evenly distributed with no weak or dead spots what so ever.

OPAL STORAGE: We strongly suggest storing ANY opal in a wet or very humid environment. Simply put few drops of water into your display container or wrap up opal in cotton and sprinkle with water.
