Topstitch and metallic needles are identical. They have a very long eye in relation to the needle size. The length of the eye is longer than in the Universal needle system 130/705 H and remains a 2mm constant in all sizes |

When we hear the term Topstitch Needle our first thought is the decorative stitching on clothing,
purses, car seats, furnature, shoes, etc. Topstitching (other terms used are saddlestitching or
edgestitching) is usually seen as a long stitch along seam lines and hem edges with a thicker thread
and most often found on home dec and upholstery type items yet, has been seen on lighter items like
purses, tote bag straps/handles, and even quilting.
This type of needle has its place in general sewing as well. It's characteristics is the extra large eye
and large grooves to accomodate heavy topstitch threads (such as Buttonhole Twist, 12 weights, and
some of the fancier rayons like decor 6, etc.). Additionally, it has an extra sharp point to allow easy
penetration through most types of fabrics and materials. When using heavier threads for the
decorative work you will still wind your bobbin with a 50wt -60wt standard sewing thread or a bobbin
and lingerie thread used in machine embroidery (unless of course your item is reversible).
This needle assists the home sewer to stitch perfectly straight lines and even stitches. When using
metallic threads, and a metallic needle isn't handy, a topstitch needle can be a good substitute in a
pinch. The larger eye and groove can minimize or even eliminate the shredding and breaking that can
occur with standard needles. When using heavier threads or when a perfectly straight stitch is
essential a topstitch needle is the best choice.
It is helpful to use a straight stitch plate if you expect perfectly straight top stitching results. To further
aid in really straight lines of stitching, attach your edge stitching foot (a foot with a guide to align the
material being stitched). If you are going to change the needle position, switch back to the zig zag
stitch plate. Generally, this needle is used for decorative straight stitching with heavier threads and a
longer stitch length.
For extra thick lines of stitching choose the triple (or reinforcing) stitch on your sewing machine.
Another option is to use two strands of threads in the needle. You will need to thread your machine as
if you are using a twin needle to avoid crossed threads and thread breakage, but both threads will be
threaded through the needles eye. This is where a larger size needle will be essential.
This needle comes in sizes 10/70 through 16/100. You will need to choose the size based on the type
of thread being used.
Topstitch needles generally are available many sizes: 70/10, 80/12, 90/14, 100/16.
70/10 needles are a good choice for sewing on lightweight materials. Normal threads or metallic
threads used would be between sizes 50 to 60.
Size 80/12 is used if a 70/10 needle seems to be to small for the materials and threads being used.
Use mostly on light to medium weight materials and choose a 30 to 50 weight thread.
Size 90/14 is best and most used size usually with medium to slightly heavier fabrics from batiks, basic
cottons, etc. to denim jeans, imitation leather, suede, quilting layers and other thicker materials. etc.
Switch to this size if you are experiencing stitch problems thread or needle breakage from a smaller
needle. Thread sizes can range from Buttonhole Twist, 12wt, 30wt, 40wt to 50wt threads or two
threads in the same eye with the machine threaded in the same manner for twin needle sewing.
Size 100/16 is used for tougher applications and/or thicker threads; such as Buttonhole Twist or Decor
6 rayon. Note that 90/14 through 100/16 needles leave a larger hole in the project because of the size
increase, though it may be necessary to choose one of these sizes if your experiencing breakage of
needle and threads from smaller sizes or when using thicker threads. A thing to note is that this larger
size creates the best saddle stitching look we love on purses and home dec items.
