Dave Charlton
Nationality: South Africa
Date of birth: October 27, 1936 - Yorkshire, England

Charlton rivaled John Love for the title of most successful domestic F1 Championship contender on the South African scene, buying a succession of competitive ex-works cars to sustain his reputation during the 1960s and early 1970s. He made his Formula 1 debut in the 1967 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami where hisBrabham-Climax BT11 was not classified, then progressed via a Brabham-Repco BT20 to an ex-Jo BonnierLotus 49C in 1970 when he finished the race 12th. In 1971 he drove a works Lotus 72 in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone prior to purchasing the car and shipping it home, returning the following year for a three race European tour which saw him fail to finish a single race. By the end of the 1970s Charlton had given up even national level single seaters and switched to saloon car racing.
