Sword and Medals that belonged to SA NAVY CAPTAIN 01222785E Thornly Cecil Bawden
Thornly Cecil Bawden was born in 1919 and served in the Second World War and SA Navy until his retirement in 1976 with the senior officers rank of Captain (SA Navy)
All the items shown below belonged (or were awarded) to him during his long navy career.
The sword is in my opinion in excellent condition. It was made by Wilkinson Sword with the number 90915 engraved on the blade. The blade is approx. 77 mm in length. The scabbard is approx. 79 mm in length. The sword is approx. 91.5 mm in total length.
The ceramic front-piece of the Southern Cross medal has become diss-attached and must be glued back again. The miniature Southern Cross medal has a part of the ceramic piece missing. All the other medals look to be in fine condition.
In the first picture, Captain Bawden is shown with the sword while being congratulated (according to a family member) by Admiral Hugo Biermann, the former Chief of the South African Navy and the South African Defence Force.
