Georgian transfer & hand-painted tea-bowl and saucer 1780-1810

A superb example of a Late Georgian tea bowl and matching saucer, depicting  two cherubs on either side of the bowl and a rose at the bottom.  The saucer shows the same two cherubs. Both items are transfer-printed and hand clobbered (meaning that, once the transfer had been made, the plates were enhanced with further painting) with green, blue, rose-pink and a flesh color enamels. Clobbering was often used AFTER the initial glazing. This was because there were few colors available at that time which could withstand the heat from the glazing. Typical of this period, the tea bowl shows no handle and the saucer shows no well for the bowl to sit in.  This is quite an unusual style for a tea-bowl, being quite tall compared to other styles typical of this period. I have not been able to find any similar shape with my research. Again, typical of the period, there are no makers marks.  However, a very good indication of its age is in the glazing.  Although these articles were made of bone china, so thin that you can see outer design from the inside of the bowl, the glazing is certainly not perfect.
There are numerous imperfections, some tiny bubbles,  and some 'carbon' spots due to dust whilst in the furnace, all indicating that the potter had not fully mastered the glazing techniques. What is interesting is that few potters worked in 'bone china' at this time.
Bone china was developed by Thomas Frye at his Bow porcelain factory in 1748.  Josiah Spode developed his own version somewhere between 1789-1793. Bone china was expensive to produce and only the rich could afford it, indicating that the tea-bowl and saucer were evidently from a well-known and respected potter from Staffordshire.
The items are both in very good condition although there is a very small, tight crack of about 1.2 cm at the top of the bowl. It is very difficult to see, but, I assure you it is there!
The saucer shows no cracks and neither article shows any chipping, a testimony to the strength of 'bone china'.  There is remarkably little paint wear.
The tea-bowl stands 6.2 cm high with a diameter of 7.5 cm at the top, whilst the saucer stands 2.5 cm high with a diameter of 13.5 cm.
