SA's Medallic History: BARTHOLOMEU DIAZ AT KWAAIHOEK (1488) : Sterling Silver Medal

Bartolomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer who sailed around the southernmost tip of Africa in 1488, the first European known to have done so. Kwaaihoek is a rocky headland on the coast of Algoa Bay, near Bushman's River Mouth in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

It is here that Bartolomeu Dias erected the Padrão de São Gregório, his first Padrão, or stone cross on 12 March 1488.

This huge medal was minted in Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) and coated in 24 carat gold. It is 45 mm in diameter and weighs approx. 40 grams.
