SA’s Medallic History: VAN RIEBEECK LANDS AT THE CAPE (1652) : Sterling Silver Medal

In 1651, the VOC requested Jan van Riebeeck to undertake the command of the initial Dutch settlement in the future South Africa. He landed three ships Dromedaris, Reijger and Goede Hoop at the future Cape Town on 6 April 1652 and fortified the site as a halfway-station for the VOC trade route between the Netherlands and the East Indies.

This huge medal was minted in Sterling Silver (92.5% pure silver) and coated in 24 carat gold. It is 45 mm in diameter and weighs approx. 40 grams.
