LOUIS AUDIE | ||
Born 1935 – South Africa On artist stretched canvas. Oils 610mm x 510mm. Unframed | ||
Louis Audie initially taught himself to paint using whatever materials came to hand and on whatever surface he could find. From school days onwards, he refined his technique through constant practice and application and wherever possible, from direct observation. Wildlife and in particular, the varied South African and Namibian landscapes and the arid Karoo, are special favourites for Louis to paint. To broaden his view and knowledge of art techniques and the history of art, Louis read a degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. His style was not greatly influenced by the experience but he now knew how to look afresh and in depth at scenes he had hitherto taken for granted. His attention to detail and overall mood of his landscapes made his work sort after by native South Africans and visitors alike. Louis is never happier than when he is “lost in his own landscapes”; whether it is the Karoo (he pronounces it Karooer), the silence of an early morning or late afternoon will find him hard at work painting directly from life. He is known as the contemporary father of modern landscape oil painting in South Africa and has produced two videos on his techniques. Louis believes that he has brought the African Sunlight into many homes, corporate offices and boardrooms of many people with his landscapes and wildlife paintings which are realistic with a touch of impressionism. His has been painting for the past fifty years, in oils and more recently in acrylics and mixed media. Among his many mentors are; W. H. Coetzer. Gerrie Snyman. and Thornley Stewart. |
