Antique French Faience circa 1790-1840 Â 'Delft' vase. Possibly Desvres.
Ref. Nov118b
The French faience pottery dates back to the 18th Century, but, it was only during the reign of Louis XIV, who, being bankrupt, had the idea of confiscating all utensils, vessels and plates made out of gold or silver. This led to a rush by the French elite to quickly replace their possessions with something else, in this case, faience work.
Desvres, situated in north central France, has been a pottery center since early times, having excavated pottery kilns from the Roman era. In the 1870 the heyday of Desvres pottery began as the Formaintraux family of potters perfected their craft in the style and manor of old Rouen. Their retail operations provided cachepots, plates, candlesticks, miniatures, and other decorative items. Desvres pottery is known for a creamy white background decorated with bright ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂDelft blue, brilliant lemon yellow, iron red and sage green.
The vase offered above, stands 15cm high with a diameter of 11cm at its widest. The vase shows a typical floral design in royal blue, terra cotta, light green and brown on a creamy background. Signed on the bottom but illegible. Age has seen some slight chipping to the rim as can be seen in the photos above. There are no cracks nor any restoration.
Look carefully at the vase and you will discern small pinpricks in the glaze, typical in a very early piece.
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
