Obsidian is a naturally formed. It is created when molten lava cools too quickly to crystallize and, instead, forms amorphous masses of silica. Obsidian can occur naturally in black, brown, grey, and sometimes red, blue, and green shades.
Obsidian is considered a semiprecious gem in spite of the fact that it is actually glass that forms during the rapid cooling of volcanic lava. The stone is most often black in colour, however, it has also been found in clear form as well as in the colours of mahogany brown, silver grey, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and red, with the pink and reds being the rarest. These colours form when hematite deposits are present within the gem.
