In recent months we have championed, and extolled, the virtues, of gemstones not often seen on BoB. Amongst others, the Spinel, the Cambodian Zircon, the Congo Andesine, and of course, the utterly incredible Sphene Titanite.
Earth mined in the Kola Peninsula, Russia, this extraordinary pair of unique gemstones gave me no choice but to list them on our ‘It Takes Two’ collection.
They have a HUGE 'Rainbow Spark' - the characteristic that makes the Sphene so uniquely beautiful. The ‘Rainbow Spark’ that these two have just has to be seen to be believed !! Sphene Titanite's are becoming VERY VERY fashionable in jewellery internationally - the pair on auction here would be just perfect as 'stud' earrings set in yellow gold. They are sensational !
The Kola Peninsula is a place of amazing, if stark, beauty, and apart from the liveliness of Murmansk, it's the fresh-air attractions that make it exciting - skiing and snowboarding at Kirovsk, hiking in the Khibiny mountains, fishing some of the world's best salmon rivers, snowmobile safaris in winter, swimming in the White Sea in summer.
The Kola Peninsula is also extraordinarily rich in rare minerals and semiprecious stones, and hunting for these is another special pastime here.
Sphene is named from the greek word for wedge, because of its typical wedge shaped crystal habit. It is also alternatively called Titanite for its titanium content. Sphene can be cut as gems although it is something of a rarity on the gem market. It brings to the table a fire greater than diamond and unique color shades. It’s ‘rainbow spark’ really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. It has long been a favourite of serious gemstone enthusiasts, and rightfully so.
