Shipwreck Pirate Spanish Maravedis/Cob coin, circa 1624 - 1641. Ref. JA38  On offer is this superb Spanish 'Pirate' copper coin recovered from a shipwreck and dated somewhere between 1624 to 1641. This Spanish coin, equivalent to eight Maravidas, would have been from the reign of Philip IV of Spain. This is a 'hammered' coin, which would likely have been produced either in Spain or in one of the 'New Colonies' in the Americas.These copper Maravedi were first struck in Seville, Spain, and were for the use for payment of smaller transactions in the colonies. The 'hammered' coin was produced by heating a piece of bronze, copper, silver or gold to soften it and then hammering it between two 'dies'. Each die was of iron and had the design carved into it. This was a rather primitive method of producing coins but it was used for hundreds of years in Europe. The above coin shows a 'lion', a symbol often found in coins of this age in Spain. On the reverse side, is a three-turreted 'castle'. The date, unfortunately, is no longer visible, but the letter 'R' is distinctly shown to the left of the castle and the Roman numeral III or IIII to the right . Many of these coins were minted during the reign of Philip II and over-stamped (and upgraded to a higher denomination) by Philip IV. However, I cannot see an overstamp with this particular coin.  The coin is quite irregular, being hand-made, these coins were never the same in shape nor weight. It measures roughly 14mm - 16mm in diameter with a weight of 1.87 grams and is 1.5mm thick. Even though it has been in the sea for a few hundred years, it remains in fair condition. Please note - I am NOT a numismatist, but, from my research, I believe this coin is dated and identified correctly. My apologies, if I am wrong. This is a genuine antique.
