Born Rolihlahla Mandela on 18 July 1918 in Mvezo, in the Transkei. His father was Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Henry, chief of Mvezo and his mother, Noqaphi Nosekeni, one of the Chief’s four wives.
The family moved to Qunu where Mandela spent his early childhood. After the death of his father he went to live with the regent of the Thembu people, Chief Jongintaba Dalindyebo, who lived in a compound called the “Great Place” in Mqhekezweni.
The coins, available in denominations of R1, R5 and R25 (stirling silver, 1/10oz pure gold and 1oz pure gold respectively) show aspects of this early time in Mandela’s life.
The arrival of Nelson Mandela and his mother is portrayed on the reverse of the stirling silver R1 Protea coin, with the quote “In that moment of beholding Jongintaba and his court I felt like a sapling pulled root and branch from the earth and flung into the center of a stream whose strong current I could not resist.”
Noted for his adoration of children, the pure gold R5 (1/10oz) coin shows the silhouette of a child with a quote taken from the launch of the Nelson Mandela Children’s fund in May 1995: “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
Images inspired by Mandela’s boyhood, including his beloved stick-fighting and the rural village he so loved, are featured on the reverse of the pure gold R25 (1oz) Protea coin, with the quote: “…it was in that village near Umtata that I spent the happiest years of my boyhood and whence I trace my earliest memories.”
Part of the Protea coin set, the commemorative Nelson Mandela Life of a Legend series aptly depicts South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea on the obverse of each coin. For the inaugural set, the flowers frame an older Madiba in one of his trademark silk shirts.
