Anglo Boer War : SILVER Pocket Watch awarded to L Holcroft : Imperial Yeomanry (March 1900)
This Swiss made .935 Silver Pocket watch (with German Hallmarks) is approx. 54 mm in diameter and weighs 107. 4 grams.
This watch is in working order but the seconds arm is missing.
It is inscribed as follows...
“To L Holcroft on his volunteering for active service in the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa from H V Haig of Ramornie. March 1900”
Hugh Veitch Haigh (born 1845) lived at “Ramornie” Ladybank in Fife and was a Justice of the Peace, heir to the John Haigh Whisky family and brother to Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig of Bemersyde, KT, GCB, OM, GCVO, KCIE, ADC, (19 June 1861 – 29 January 1928).
Hugh Veitch Haig's son Lieutenant Colonel John Haig, Westminster Dragoons attached to MGC won the DSO and was MID 3 times he served in France, Balkans, Egypt and Palestine. His other son Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Haig of the Westminster Dragoons attached to the Remount Service served in France.
A pocket watch with the same inscription but awarded to another Imperial Yeomanry volunteer by the same H V Haig of Ramornie (also March 1900) sold for £638.00 (over R10 000) on EBay after 35 bids were received.
