The Nelson Mandela Rivonia Treason Trial Tribute 5 Oz Bronze Medal. Dated Oct 1963 - May 1964. Produced in France at the Paris Mint by Medalist J. Coppin. This is the largest of all the Mandela tribute medals and the only one showing him as a young man.
The medal was issued at the time of the Rivonia Treason Trail held in the Pretoria Supreme Court. The reverse inscription is taken from Mandela's statement from the dock at the opening of the case for the defence on 20th April 1964. Translated back into in English: “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” At the conclusion of the trial Mandela and seven others (Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi, Andrew Mlangeni, Ahmed Kathrada and Denis Goldberg) were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
