Guts2Glory is a nonprofit organization who raises fund for physically challenged children, adults and sportsmen.
Guts2Glory will be hosting a Man vs Machine event on the 29th of June 2014. The event is a 42.2km marathon from Camps bay to Bloubergstrand whereby one amputee athlete and one wheelchair athlete will be pushing /walking to raise funds for Gabriella Center and Guts2Glory.

Man vs. Machine

Zizipho Ndlwana and Clifford Martin have taken on the challenge to walk/push 42.2km from Camps bay to Bloubergstrand to raise funds for the Gabriella Centre and Guts2Glory athletes.

There are several ways the community and companies can get involved.

•Make a pledge per km covered
•Make a donation
•Purchase advertising pace on the shirt or Zizipho’s leg
•All contributions are welcome and appreciated.

Who will receive the monies raised and where will it go to?

All monies raised at this event will go to Guts2Glory, Guts2Glory will give a portion of the monies raised to Gabriella Centre and the remainder of the monies raised will go to sporting equipment need by one of Guts2Glory’s athlete’s, a portion will be given to another athlete to put towards his studies to help him complete his Master’s Degree Sport Management.

All monies that are left over from this fundraiser will be placed in the Guts2Glory trust to help other athletes when need be.

What makes this 42.2km different to other fundraisers?

What makes this challenge different is that Zizipho will be using his own everyday leg and not a fancy light weight leg and Clifford will be using his everyday wheelchair, not a fancy super fast 3 wheelchair or hand cycle but a normal chair.
Thus putting allots of strain on Zizipho and Clifford and making the challenge more difficult than one can imagine.

Zizipho and Clifford will be following the cycle rout deviating through some other well know landmarks like beach front and water front, making notes of how accessible the roads, pavements, cycle rout and water front is for persons with a disability and will compile a report and send a copy to the relevant people so if there are any issues that arises the relevant people can be informed and decide what they would like to do with the information gathered

To understand the marathon with its complexities you have to understand how this will happen.

We have to move along pavements not in the road which is difficult because sidewalks is not even and there are road signs in the way you have to look at every curb where you have to go down and back up on the other side.
If the route is either cobble or brick every movement travels through the chair and could cause damage to the chair.
There are a couple of hills that Clifford needs be pushed they are that steep.
Travelling through the harbour is an obstacle but there is no way around it.
The chair is a normal chair not a chair that is built for long distance travel with a third wheel in front so flipping backwards is always a possibility.

Clifford will wheel himself except in extreme cases where it is either too steep or he cannot go down a curb or up a curb.
Clifford will spend about between 6 to 8 hours in the chair wheeling himself using his upper body strength and arms and hands.
This chair weighs 12.7 kg a dedicated racing chair weighs 3.5kg

Part of the journey would be to show City of Cape Town, V & A Waterfront and Capetownias in general how difficult it is travelling in Cape Town along the beach front in a wheel chair.

Zizipho who conquered Kilimanjaro will do the same route. Zizipho is doing this on a normal prosthetic leg which does not have the flexibility or ease of use as the legs use by top athletes.

Please support this epic adventure and help raise funds and awareness about the issues that people with disability struggle with on a daily basis.
