Shipwreck Piece-of-Eight (8-Reaal or Pillar Dollar) of 1743: The Reigersdaal Shipwreck
This Spanish 8-Reaal was struck at Mexico City in 1743. It weighs 25.6 grams and is 38 mm in diameter. It was salvaged from the well known Reigersdaal shipwreck. See pages 102, 112 and 113 of Malcolm Turner’s Shipwrecks and Salvage in South Africa
The Reigersdaal was an outward-bound Dutch East-Indiaman of 850 tons that was wrecked on 25 October 1747 near Springfontein Point (our West Coast). She had on board a large hoard of silver specie which was in mint condition at the time the vessel was wrecked.
