PYGURUS MARMONTI ECHINOID FOSSIL
Jurassic epoch specimen from Madagascar - 160 million years old
100% authentic fossil from the age of the dinosaurs

Pygurus marmonti is an extinct sand dollar or sea urchin from Sakaraha, Madagascar, dating from the middle Jurassic (Callovian) period, about 160 million years ago.
Modern day sand dollars bury themselves in the sand in shallow waters and feed off the fine organic particles that are mixed in with the sand.
It is possible that these ancient ones had the same feeding patterns.

This Pygurus is particularly well-preserved. It had all the excess matrix removed to reveal echinoid and polished to reveal the intricate patterns.
Total size of echinoid - approximately 8cm - 9cm in diameter with a height of 2.5cm. Some fine cracks are visible, but these are not structural.
Echinoids are a must have specimen for the fossil collector and make great gifts too!

Please have a look at the detailed images to verify condition etc.
