While Joan is a distant relative of Vincent she does not require such connections to establish her credentials as a great artist. Her work clearly speaks for itself.
While her grandfather was Vincent's cousin, Joan is a dyed-in-the-wool South African, her parents having emigrated from Holland in 1937. She was born a few years later and after sound art tuition in her early twenties she followed her husband into the African bush. And it was there, as husband Adrian Boshier recorded ancient rock art for Walter Battiss, that her deep artistic links with this country's flora began In earnest. A long and often turbulent life has been characterised by one overriding feature: she has stuck devotedly to her role as a creator of wonderful, mainly botanical, art works. Not only has she illustrated several leading scientific books on our flora, but she has completed commissions for the SA Philatelic Services. Some of her stamps are still in circulation, and the flrst-day covers of her work are often on display at exhibitions. The key link between Joan and Vincent's work lies In their reliance on that fundamental building block of all great art: strong, accurate drawing. While there are quite a number of obviously botanical works, all of great quality, it is among the more traditional watercolours and oil paintings that the real gems are to be found.
