Old man saltbush can be utilised as follows: · As pasture crop, old man saltbush plays an important role because it provides valuable green pasturage during the dry season. Because it produces a great deal of plant material, it is possible to withdraw a large number of animals from the veld and to put them to graze on old man’s salt-bush. · Old man saltbush serves as shelter for small stock during critical periods such as during lambing or just after shearing, and it provides shade in summer. · The crop can be planted in dense rowsto prevent water and wind erosion. · Old man saltbush plants make good firewood. The plant recovers very well even if it is chopped down to the ground. It can, for example, be chopped down for firewood every second or third year, after small stock has stripped the branches of leaves. |
Old man saltbush can be planted until late in winter. The best results are often achieved with August and September plantings. If planting takes place before 15 July, establishment and growth during the first year is usually poor, but the most important factor still remains the amount of moisture in the soil. The higher the rainfall in an area, the later planting can take place, because saltbush does not grow when winter temperatures are low.
