Bonsai Soil Mix, 2 Litre

Because bonsai trees are grown in a very small amount of soil, the selection of soil in which to grow your bonsai tree is very important.

It is essential that bonsai soil be air permeable and provide good drainage. The soil should also be suited to the climate where the bonsai will be raised.

Every soil mix should have a measure of organic and inorganic component to it. It is important that the organic component not be such that it will degrade to such a point that it will become compacted and water logged in a short space of time. The organic component should however retain a certain amount of moisture, making it available to the tree during the course of the day. Normal garden soil is never used in a bonsai mix.

The inorganic component assists with drainage. Adding higher quantities of sand will increase drainage. Stone is also used in an effort to prevent soil from compacting but it also plays a part in the type of root growth one achieves. Using sharp sand and stone causes the root tips to split, rounded or smoother sand and stone will result in the root tips being able to make their way through. A balance of both sharp and smooth is good.

For fast draining bonsai growing mediums it is advisable to use a slow release type of fertilizer which will release nutrients into the soil each time the tree is watered. Bonsai Boost is such a fertilizer and can be ordered here: www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/146165012/BonsaiBoost_Bonsai_Organic_Fertilizer.html you could also add seaweed to this mix as a slow release organic fertilizer, you will find this here: www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/146839654/250g_Milled_Seaweed_soil_amendment_for_bonsai_amp_other_plants.html

Our bonsai growing medium consists of:

  1. Milled mature pine bark
  2. Crushed silica stone

For a more acid mix try adding acidic peat or decomposed pine needles. For a faster draining mix add more crushed stone.
