DESCRIPTION | A really beautiful and large original pastel (with outlining of charcoal) artwork depicting a MADONNA WITH 2 SNAKEBIRDS. Drawn by the listed and very accomplished late South African artist BEN MACALA (1938 - 1997). The artwork is done on paper and it is framed in a very extensive and expensive broad gilded frame with an inner frame, double mount and protected by glass. The artist has signed the artwork at bottom right and also dated it 1995. The artwork measures 1140 x 9100 mm in the frame and the artwork alone measures 850 x 620 mm (it is very big). You can see the artwork as it is sold in the image above. There are four more images and further particulars below. Please have a look at them and ask a question if there is anything you are unsure about. |
CONDITION | Both the artwork and frame are in very good (as new) condition and it can be hung as is. |
BEN MACALA needs no introduction to the South African art lover and collector. The artist died at the relatively young age of 59 after a productive period of about 30 years during which his art output showed constant improvement and refinement in quality. He exhibited extensively (including 13 times in the USA) and had as tutors and mentors Cecil Skotness, Ephraim Ngatane and Bill Ainslee. The artwork on offer here was produced late in his life and it is the most attractive, technically most accomplished and most extensive of his artworks that I have handled in the past 40 years. In this artwork, I believe, he set out to produce something exceptional and a bit different. Where his work usually only depicted one or two objects and were quite 2 dimensional, the one on offer here depicts several objects and he has also given it the third dimension of depth by placing the focal point (madonna) to the left instead of centrally as usual and placing objects behind her as well as in front of her. Since the artwork was produced late in his life (less than 2 years before his death) it clearly depicts the refinement which he attained in later life. The artwork is also extensively and beautifully framed. I believe that South African Black art from the earlier Black artists has not come to it's own from a point of view of value and that the painting on offer here is an EXCELLENT INVESTMENT PIECE at the low opening price at which it is offered. |
