MORNING GLORY
Morning glories are vines with lovely bell-shaped flowers. The heavenly blue species is very popular with gardeners. As the name suggests, the flowers bloom during the morning hours and then wither during the day under sunny conditions. Each dawn brings new fresh blossoms
They are decorative additions to homes and backyards as they gracefully grow over trellises, fences, and walls. In fact, morning glories are hardy plants that thrive under poor soil conditions with little maintenance. When caring for them, follow proper steps to enjoy healthy attractive vines for years to come.
Planting
Choose an appropriate location away from vegetation that could be threatened by the vigorous vines. The location should also receive lots of direct sun. Soak seeds in water overnight or cut the surface to encourage absorption of water and fast germination. Plant the seeds 20 to 30 cm apart at a depth of 10 – 12 mm.
You can also plant morning glories in pots.
Provide support 2,5 to 3 m high depending on how tall that type of morning glory grows. As the vines develop, carefully twist them around the support. Keep the soil moist and throw away vines that are damaged by frost.
Water
Water the morning glory once a week in the absence of rain. Water the plant twice a week during hot and dry summer months. Avoid over-watering them, and ensure that the soil is well-drained. If you are growing the plant from seeds, stop watering or applying fertilizer once the plant matures. This will encourage the plant to bloom.
Soil
Morning glories are not picky and they respond well to poor soil conditions. However, for the best results the soil should be neutral or slightly alkaline. If planting, keep the soil moist but not wet.
Support
Provide support for the vines as they grow upwards. If possible, plant them next to a chain-link fence or trellis, so the vines can attach. Carefully twist the vines and train them to climb their supports. Because morning glories grow tall and thick, they are often used to create privacy in one's backyard. They can also provide shade in hot sunny areas. If you want them to grow on the side of a wall, provide netting or strings. In no time, they will attach and climb.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced water soluble fertilizer each week or a slow release fertilizer according to manufacturer's directions. Do not use a high nitrogen fertilizer, which encourages more leaf growth but fewer flowers.
Blooms
A common problem with morning glories is that they grow extensive vines but few flowers. This occurs from a variety of factors such as overwatering, too much fertilizer, insufficient sun or a combination of all.
Control
Morning glories are strong vigorous vines reaching up to 10 feet long on average. They can quickly take over an area such as a vegetable garden or even spread into a neighbour's yard. To control the growth, remove the sprouting vines as they poke up from the ground or use a commercial weed killer only on the unwanted parts. Ensure the chemicals are not applied to grass or other vegetation as it may cause damage.
Another solution for vines that are growing out of control is to limit the amount of sunlight they receive. You can do this by covering the vines with carpet, cardboard, turf, or newspaper.
Remove dead or diseased vines with gardening shears and throw them away in plastic bags. Avoid leaving them in your yard as they will reseed and continue to grow in that spot.
Pruning
Cut back the vines minimally if you need to improve the appearance of the plant in the fall or summer. Pruning more aggressively in the winter and spring encourages thicker growth.
