A beautiful example of WH Coetzer's original work in pastel. Coetzer kept certain kinds of subject a ‘private’ matter. At one time, for example, still life was a genre in which he worked entirely to his own satisfaction, not intending it in any way for public consumption. The ‘discovery’ of Coetzer as a still life painter by an appreciative public was a later development in his career. His work in pastel was largely intended for friends and family.
WH Coetzer was born in 1900 in Tarkastad, Cape Province and died in 1983 in Johannesburg. In the South African context, Irma Stern, Hugo Naude, WH Coetzer and JH Pierneef are regarded as old masters. It would be difficult to buy any of their painting cheaply and when a quality piece comes on the market, it will reach premium prices.
