The Alabama captured a Federal ship, The Sea-Bride, in Table Bay and was followed by a Northern cruiser, The Vanderbiltwhich seized a South African ship, The Saxon. The Bradlows describe these events and their consequences. The book includes appendices relating to the re-burial of Simeon Cummings in Tennessee (he had originally been buried in Saldanha), the exploring of the wreck and the Alabama arbitration by Judge Farlam.

The American Confederate raider Alabama called in at Cape Town in 1863, inspiring the popular local song "Here comes the Alabama" - "Daar kom die Alabama".
