DESCRIPTION | WALTER SIEBERT - LEMAN, the very well known German book illustrator and artist lived in South Africa for a while during the 1930s. During that period of his life he engraved some of South Africa's famous landmarks on copper plates, including two different views of the Union Buildings that I have come across in my 45 years in the art and antiques business. Of all the paintings and engravings of the Union Buildings I have seen, the engraving by Siebert - Leman of THE UNION BUILDINGS FROM THE EAST which I have on offer here is by far the most beautiful one. The engraving also shows part of Tinytown on Church Street (which still exists today) in the foreground and houses to the east of the Union Buildings and is a lovely etched historical record of that part of Meintjies Hill as it was in 1934. This scarce etching surely is a piece which belongs in a museum of Old Pretoria. The artist signed this work and dated it 1934 at bottom right (in pencil) and also numbered it 52 / 60 at the centre of the bottom margin. What a shame it is that only 60 copperplate impressions were made of this magnificent artwork! The engraving is mounted and framed in the original thin gilt on wood frame and protected by glass. The complete framed artwork measures 53 x 45 cm and the engraving alone measures 22 x 28 cm. You can see the item as sold in the image above and there are 4 more images with detail which follow. If interested, please have a good look at the images and descriptions and ask a question if there is anything you are unsure about. |
CONDITION | This artwork shows some even browning on the mounting and laid paper. There is also some creasing of the laid artist's paper which was apparently caused by the roller during the pressing of the artwork. These minor imperfections are, however, very insignificant and rather add to the authenticity and antiquity of the artwork. I have made no attempt to have it re - mounted or re - framed since I felt that it would detract from this lovely engraving which, in my opinion, should remain exactly as it is. |
Beautiful artwork done by an excellent artist known for his beautiful etchings and book illustrations.Very popular and collectable. This is also a prime investment item since only 60 were pressed. If you want it for your collection of Africana engravings place your bid. It is very unlikely that you will see it again. This is the only one I have come across in over 4 decades of dealing in South African art. For more information research the artist on the Internet. You will find him mentioned on Artprice.com and also on the sites of the South African art auctioneers.
The artwork on auction here shown without the frame. Detail of the focal point of the etching, showing the lovely fine artwork. Note the buildings of Tinytown on Church Street in the foreground which still exist today. The artists signature appears in the margin at bottom right and he has numbered the etching 52 / 60 at the centre of the bottom margin (both done in lead pencil). The framed engraving from behind and shown with a matchbox to give an idea of relative size. It measures 53 x 45 cm. SHIPPING COST R68 IN SOUTH AFRICA. FOR OTHER COUNTRIES: THE POST OFFICE PARCEL RATE PLUS 20%.
