A magnificent original oil painting by one of South Africa's masters Sydney Carter (1874 - 1994) - 26 x 20cm, beautifully framed.
Sydney Carter, son of artist Richard Carter, was born in Enfield, England and resided in South Africa from 1923. Mr Carter is considered a painter of portraits and landscapes, generally incorporating trees. He has been known to work in oil and gouache and is also cartoonist.
In 1924, he was elected a fellow of the Cape Town Society of Arts and Crafts and began teaching at the Witwatersrand Technical College in 1927. He also illustrated several editions of works by Charles Dickens, Jane Austin and Charlotte Bronte. South African illustrations include Dorothea Faribridge.
He participated in several group exhibitions throughout South Africa - 1974 Pretoria Art Museum, Commemorative exhibition & 1949 Gainsborough Gallery, Johannesburg, Commemorative exhibition.
His public commissions include five landscape murals in Jeppe Street Post Office, Johannesburg in 1936 and two murals in Cape Town Post Office in 1938.
He is represented at the Africana Museum - Johannesburg, Albany Museum - Grahamstown, Ann Bryant Gallery - East London, Durban Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, National Museum - Bloemfontein, Pretoria Art Museum, South African National Gallery - Cape Town, University of Pretoria and William Humphreys Art Gallery - Kimberley.
Sydney Carter died in Harrismith, Orange State in 1945.
