Chewing releases feel-good chemicals from the brain and keeps dogs happy, busy and using up energy. Stagbars last longer than any other dog chew on the market – longer than rawhide chews or compacted vegetable starch chews.

Stagbars do not splinter but rather wear down slowly, with the grinding action of the dog's teeth and saliva, into tasty morsel as worked on by the dog. Once they've worn the outer bone away they reach dry "marrow" - which is their favourite part.

Stagbar are not an "empty" chew like rawhide but instead contain important minerals, only 3% fat and naturally, they don't contain additives or preservatives. They are effectively raw and so retain all their goodness and safety.

Stagbars are clean dog chews, leaving no stain or mess on the carpet and they are also very low in odour – some say they have a very faint smell of fresh soil.

ALL ABOUT ANTLER

Deer shed their antlers annually as a prelude to the regeneration, or re-growth, of new ones.

During the growth phase of the bony antlers they are covered with a sensitive skin referred to as "velvet" which is filled with blood vessels that feed the antlers the vitamins and the minerals necessary to build bone and promote normal antler growth. Antler growth spans two to four months after which time the velvet is no longer needed, and a ring, which effectively serves as a shutoff valve, forms at the base of the antlers and cuts off the blood supply to the velvet. As a result, the velvet withers, dries up, and falls off, often assisted by the deer, which rubs his antlers against tree bark. The antler regeneration is complete, and the shedding cycle will resume once mating season in the fall concludes.

THE GOODNESS OF ANTLER

The Goodness of Antler
The antlers themselves differ from the hollow horns of cattle in that they comprise solid bone tissue with a honey combed structure. Not only are Stagbars great for cleaning teeth and keeping dogs busy but they also contain a fantastic amount of minerals.

ORIGIN & ETHICS

Stagbar dog chews are deer antlers, shed naturally each year by Red Deer, then gathered up, cleaned and cut to size. They are ethically sourced from naturally shed deer antler within the EU and are never imported from the USA and Asia or from culled animals.

During shedding season, antler on the forest floor provide a calcium source for small woodland animals as part of the biosphere. For reasons such as this, permits are issued annually allowing only a set quanity of sheds to be collected. Stagbar does not support the farming of deer for shed collecting.

SIZE GUIDE

Because it is a natural product and impossible to achieve uniformity in each size category, there are many occasions that a medium will look longer (and thinner) than a large which might be fatter and shorter. However, it is the weight that decides the category, not the length or girth. Product images demonstrate the natural variations in size within each size category.

When selecting the size of your dog's Stagbar it's very much based on the individual. The three starting points to consider are size, breed and chewing behaviour.

Stagbars are for gnawing - you want your dog to have a good sized Stag in his mouth that he can really settle down with and gnaw on. It's not a piddly little chew stick, it's a hunk of mineral goodness for your hound to work his way through with some serious dedication. If in doubt, we recommend buying one size larger than your first guess. Remember, dogs are like babies, the bigger the chewing object, the safer the fur kid is. The Stagbar will slowly get smaller and smaller as your dog works on it so start him off with a good size that'll take a lot of gnawing before it becomes small enough to pose a choking hazard. Small Stagbars are really only suited to small puppies, mini breeds and those with delicate jaws such as Yorkies, Pomeranians & Mini Pinschers. It's not recommended to purchase a small Stagbar as a taster for larger/adult dogs as it will be inadequately sized for their jaws and not half as enjoyable.

If your dog goes through "tough"  toys like popcorn we recommend large, x-large and jumbo dependant on his size. Strong jawed breeds such a Rotties, Pit Bulls and Staffies do well with an XL or jumbo, while tenacious chewers like Beagles are suited to large and XL.  If your dog made fine work of a previous Stagbar, feel free to purchase one size up next time for a longer lasting chew. Jack Russells based on size would suit a medium, but based on their tenacity and energy levels are actually better suited to a large.

Small – toy dogs and puppies
Medium – small to medium dogs, large breed puppies
Large – medium to large dogs and tenacious chewers
Extra large – suitable for large to giant breeds and strong jawed hounds.
Jumbo - For big dogs or very serious chewers.

SAFETY

Make sure your dog is gnawing on the antler chew and not trying to break it in half. Don’t hold the antler chew for him as this may cause him to bear down on it. Leave it for him to work out how to enjoy it. Dog

Remember, dogs are like babies so as with any dog chew or toy, the following is very important: To avoid a choking risk, take the Stagbar away from your dog once it gets worn down to a small enough size that your dog could easily swallow.
