Crystoleum, Oil on Glass, this process popular from about 1880 to 1910, the process in short is that a print is stuck to a concave piece of glass then the backing is removed leaving just the emulsion, this is then sealed with starch and when dry the smaller items ( eyes, belts, hat bands, shoes etc.) are highlighted with coloured oil paint, once that is dry a further piece of concave glass is stuck to the back where the background colours are painted in, the result a detailed coloured picture with exceptional detail.
This particular Crystoleum is from " Franz Hanfsaengl copyright 1903" although believed to have been produce by his younger sibling Johhanes in 1880. and is unframed.
