NOTES

The OPALOTYPE was an early type of photography (patented by Glover and Bold of Liverpool in 1857). It involved the printing of a photograph on milk glass through wet collodion and silver gelatin. The photograph was then hand coloured with oil paint to produce an effect where the finished product which 'for beauty and delicacy of detail were equal to ivory miniatures'. An alternative description for this photographic method is 'milk glass positive.' Because of the tedious nature of this type of photography and because it involved a large measure of artistic talent from the photographer, opalotypes are rare. The opalotype disappeared early in the 20th century and this type of photography was consigned to historical status where it joined the ambrotype, autochrome, cyanotype, daguerreotype, ivorytype, kallitype, orotone, tintype etc.

Here is your rare opportunity to obtain an authentic Victorian opalotype in perfect condition for your collection. This portrait of a young girl is truly exquisite and cannot be easily matched for artistry and beauty. Don't miss out.
