A Hand-Crafted Hardwood Cigarette(?) Box. The wood is dark brown with yellowish grain and I am told that it is probably Imbuia. Set into the outside of the lid are two Austrian Maria Theresa Silver Thalers, showing both sides of the coin.
The body and the lid of the box have each been carved from one piece of wood. They fit together perfectly, both ways round. This is the work of a skilled craftsman.
Length 7" (17.8 cm). Width 4.5" (11.3 cm). Height of base 1.5" (3.5 cm). Height with lid 2" (5.4 cm). Weight 694 gm. The wood has a slight iridescent shimmer making it difficult for me to get the colours right. The fist image is reasonably accurate.
The two silver coins are restrikes made for trade at the Austrian Mint of the 1780 Maria Theresa Thaler. Both show cleaning rub marks. Coin Diameter39.5 mm. Coin Weight 28.1 gm. Silver content 83%. Actual silver content of both coins 1.5 oz Troy.
