Very well defined Cretacious epoch specimen
100% authentic and natural 66-145 Million year old fossil
Lycoptera is a genus of fish that lived from the late Jurassic to Cretaceous periods in present-day China, Korea, Mongolia and Siberia.
Lycoptera species were small freshwater fish. Most species fed on plankton, and had numerous tiny teeth. A few species like L. gansuensis, L. muroii, and L. sinensis had larger teeth and probably fed on small insects and their larvae.
Many specimens preserve minute details and impressions of soft tissues. Lycoptera was covered in tiny oval scales about 1.2 millimeters across, and, in life, would had a superficial resemblance to the Common minnow.
This specimen was collected in the Liaoning Province in Northeast China and dates from the Cretaceous period, from 66 to 145 million years ago.
Total size of plate - approximately 9.7cm x 5cm x 11mm thick
Length of fossil specimen - 7cm.
The matrix is a fairly hard sedimentary rock with clearly visible layers The reverse displays fragments of other fossils.
This is a fairly well defined specimen with clearly visible fins and bones, a must for any fossil collector.
It can really be described as a piece of art - Earth's ancient art - with a story to tell far superior to that of any modern artwork or artist.
