Effect of The Cape Convention on Soldier's Letters

The Cape Convention of April 1880 discontinued the practice of charging recipients 1d on soldiers' letters sent via Cape Town . Prior to this, soldiers' letters would have been forwarded via Natal which had recognised Transvaal stamps from June 1877.

On offer is an 1880 Soldier's letter from Standerton to London franked at the soldiers' 1d (Bourne Head) concessionary rate, tied by target-type canceller number "20" (Standerton) (7/10/1880) and red London arrival "Paid" handstamp (11/11/1880).  The envelope was sent via Pretoria (9/10/1880) and Cape Town (19/10/1880) by Private Charles Peters of "A" Company, 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment, and endorsed by his Commanding Officer, Captain J.L. Saunders.

The 58th was the same Regiment to be overcome at Majuba
