Semla Lagerlof was born in 1858 in Varmland, one of the most beautiful provinces of Middle Sweden. She died in 1940.
While still a child she was fascinated by folk stories, and dreamed from an early age of becoming a writer. She trained to be a teacher, and after some years as a schoolmistress she won a prize for her first novel, the famous “Gosta Berlings Saga’ (1891), which still remains her best book and assured her of the title of ‘ Sweden’s greatest story-teller’.
