Postal stationery wrappers were used to enclose or hold together unwieldy items such as newspapers and maps which were sent through the mail system. While official wrappers were introduced in May 1899, these were quite flimsy, and not suitable for holding together larger items such as a number of issues of a newspaper, etc. In these instances "homemade" wrappers were used.
On offer is the very attractive cardboard wrapper portion, as per scan below, with 6 x "Halve Penny" and 3 x "1d" provisional adhesives, as well as overprinted 6d revenue stamp, and tied by rectangular registered Johannesburg cachet (17/8/1895) to London with red registered office arrival datestamp. The postage applied amounted to 9d indicating that an item or items weighing in excess of 4.5 ounces had been transmitted.
