The Kalahari star apple is a shrubby tree 2-7 meters tall with blueish grey-green foliage. The leaves are small, narrow and crowded at the ends of the branches. The fruits are orange-red berries, about 2cm in diameter and with a distinctly star-shaped calyx at the bottom. Diospyros lycioides is a very variable species which has been subdivided into a number of subspecies and is the most prevalent member of the genus Diospyros.
