Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa, commonly known as yellow passion fruit, maracuja or yellow granadilla, is a fast-growing vine that produces excellent fruit and is also suitable for ornamental screening purposes. It grows as a semi-evergreen vine, up to 4.5 m in length.
The predominantly white flowers are 5 to 8 cm in diameter and are characterized by long, white, or white and purple, filament-like rays. The alternate curly leaves are deeply lobed, dark green, small, entire to five lobed and fine toothed. The vines climb readily by means of long tendrils in each leaf axil. The fruits are globose to ellipsoid, attain a diameter of about 5 cm and turn from green to yellow at maturity.
The interior of the brittle-shelled fruit is filled with many small seeds surrounded by a yellowish, gelatinous, aromatic pulp and juice, which is used for flavoring sherbets and for making jams and jellies or as a refreshing drink from the blended pulp. The pulp also is eaten directly from the shell. The yellow passion fruit is less fragrant and some what more acid than the purple passion fruit.and is less adaptive to cold.
It is root hardy to -3* C, with the foliage dying back in winter months in cooler climates. It likes full sun to light shade and fertile well, drained sandy soil with a Ph of 6.5 - 7.5. It can also make an excellent container plant.
